After the show of lack of respect for Africa/Africans/African Teams during the world cup coverage, Lebron James signing with my New York Knicks is the only thing that can possibly get me back to watching ESPN. As much as I can’t bear to watch the idiotic lackluster C’mon Lebron Commercial made by Mayor Bloomberg, by now the whole world knows that Lebron AKA King James is a free agent. On July 8, 2010 there will be a hour long special news conference benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to honor this history making moment in time.
“James will announce his future NBA plans during a one-hour special on its network at 9 p.m. Thursday. ESPN’s Chris Broussard said James’ “representatives” contacted the network and asked for the unusual arrangement. James’ group requested they be allowed to sell sponsorship for the special with proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.” READ MORE
As my NYU, NYC, Harlem homie D. Johnson said, “If LeBron has a primetime special to say anything less than he is coming to New York, I may need to revoke my fandom“. Well I wouldn’t go as far as revoking my fandom because there is just something special about Lebron, the way he carries himself, the way he is able to handle the media instead of the media handling him, his great knack at such a young age to always carry himself as a man & to surround himself with the type of team that have made great business decisions toward his future, the fact that he has kept his core friends & family close & his all around fun, regular dude big kid with the heart of a lion that commands respect type of personality- you know the type of guy that many used to describe Shaq as before the whole Superhead, Kobe & divorce dramas without a tight game to keep our focus on. I have loved Lebron since Sports Illustrated introduced him to the world as the “Chosen One” in 2002, but C’mon Lebron coming to the Knicks is really the only news worthy of an hour long prime time special. I mean who gets drafted right out of high school as the first round draft pick, calls ESPN & perhaps gives them the biggest bone of their slowly becoming irrelevant life-line by having an hour long prime time special to announce a free agency decision & then demands to come in with his own advertising dollars controlled by his own marketing company launched by him & his childhood friend (LRMR Marketing) with all proceeds going to the same organization that his number sake founded in Chicago & named after his beloved deceased father & the same type of charity organization that saved him from the hard knock life of the streets of Cleveland & built him to be a man who can make such moves- King James that’s who! In my Beyonce voice all I can say is- “He got a big ego, such a huge ego. I love his big ego, it’s too much.He walk like this ’cause he can back it up.”
While many say Lebron James has to be the most egoistical player ever, to have a one hour special to announce his free agency, I say this young man is a diabolical genius who knows what it’s like to struggle & put in the hard work for your dream & also knows what it is like to almost lose everything by letting others exploit you without your full control & equal benefit. I am sure Lebron made a pact with himself & the Almighty back in high school that given another chance he would never make the same mistakes again & squandor his gifts, as he saw all his hard work about to fade away by the ultimate mistake of having a little taste of money , power & respect overtake him before his time & knowing that given another chance that he would take ultimate control to make it work for him instead of against him. Lebron James has made it unabashedly clear that he wants to be a billionaire athlete in a few years in order to make sure his immediate family & generations after him do not have to struggle or have to have their dreams deferred or limited because of money. King James has found his trading places moment in his destiny & there will be no half-steppin’ on it. Kobe maybe posting up numbers & rings to aline him in the category of comparison to Michael Jordan, but Lebron James will do it his way with “Brand King James” which may have him surpassing his “Airness” & his Brand Jordan quicker than Kobe’s rings & numbers can ever equal or surpass the most famous #23.
“Due to the unprecedented attention and interest surrounding LeBron’s decision, we have decided to make this announcement on national television. By doing so we have generated funds that will be given to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. LeBron has a longstanding commitment to giving back to the community, and has worked with the Boys and Girls Clubs in cities across the country. For additional information and any other announcements concerning “The Decision,”check with www.LebronJames.com.”
While most of the experts would think I am insane for having any hopes that Lebron will come to my NY Knicks -I believe in dreaming big because I would rather lose at dreaming big than having small hopes dashed. The experts say that Lebron will most likely stay in Cleveland or go to Chicago -but isn’t #23 retired already in Chicago? More & more experts are saying Lebron will be joining Chris Bosch & Dwayne Wade in Miami; Yes Chris Bosch & Dwayne Wade seemingly became the quick side show in this extra hyped free agency hoopla. I am loving the fact that these three young Black men have taken on the power of free agency by recognizing they are not just workers for hire, but brand creators and the main show. It is beyond amazing to see the camaraderie of young Black men coming together as a franchise amongst men to make a statement in representing something beyond themselves for a future of a nation & a race of people who even when seemingly having it all with proven accomplishment they are still considered the underdog with the world waiting to see them fail instead of surpassing stereotypes & soaring beyond expectations. This can only take me back to my Black Stars & the global mutual Pan-Africanist pursuit of “Respect” in a global common struggle in life!
Many sports analyst have come down on Chris Bosch for deciding to involve new technology with twitter, facebook & making a documentary out of the free agency signing process by saying many owners became weary of him wanting to be too much of a superstar than just a player by documenting the process for the world to see what really goes on in free agency negotiations. All I can say is what do they have to hide in this day & age where everyone is touting & demanding full transparency with audiences craving to know every behind the scene exclusive detail so we are not left just believing the hype of overpaid players who don’t know how to act-now we get to see why they are worth so much to the franchises they represent. The NBA is just as much about creating superstars & brands within the brand so what’s wrong with Bosch taking the power in creating his own brand & using the music industry or global branding formula of coming in fully packaged with no artist development necessary to go full throttle on getting that advertising & branding cash where everything, win or lose surrounds capitalism & $ bills that can & will be made off of name recognition alone. Lebron James didn’t make it to the finals once again, but he rocks lucky number 23 & his Black Star bankability shines brighter than the rest-enuff said!
“Wade on LeBron James coming to Miami: “There’s no secret that myself and Chris and LeBron are all good friends. We all came into this league together and played together. But we all make our own decisions at the end of the day. So, of course, we would love for LeBron to join Miami. Who wouldn’t. But at the same time LeBron is going to make his own decision.” Note: Reading way too much into this, but … It has been well reported that Wade, James and Bosh have talked extensively about this, and it’s interesting that Wade doesn’t say anything about being happy to let James go elsewhere. He leaves the door wide open. It’s impossible to think James has told them he will go elsewhere. READ MORE

“N.Y. Knicks’ bid to the King of Cleveland included a presentation of data compiled by Interbrand, a marketing consultant… bottom line, it says James could earn almost $1 billion over his lifetime in salary and endorsements in New York if he plays till age 38. If he stays in Cleveland — No. 2 on the list, because the hometown hero thing is worth something — he’d have to settle for $699 million.” READ MORE
“I say all the time, and I tell my friends and teammates, that you have to go global,” James said. “In basketball and business.”READ MORE
