What got you started in your business?
Birth is a holy miracle after witnessing it I realized I wanted to be apart of it. I now am a nurse home visitor to first time mothers. I visit them through out their pregnancy and continue visiting them until their babies are two years old.
How does one become mid-wife? Do you have to be certified?
There are various ways to become a midwife. One way is to be a certified nurse midwife where you are first an RN then study to be a midwife. Another way is to train to be a direct midwife. They are different in various ways including settings in which they are able to practice.
what is your favorite part of your business?
Being blessed to be part of a miracle.
What are the duties of a mid-wife?
To follow, assess, treat and care for women prenatally, during labor and delivery and postpartum.
Did you use a mid-wife for your own child birth? Why or Why not?
Yes I did. Because I agree with the fundamental ways that birth is looked at and the methods that midwives use in approaching birth as "baby catchers".
What do you think of the growing trend in mothers using mid-wives & doulas?
I think it is beautiful, hopefully it will continue to grow.
Can all expecting mothers use mid-wives & doulas?
Yes as long as they are not high risk pregnancies. And then of course, finding a midwife that their insurance covers or having the money to pay for it.
How does an expectant mother go about finding a mid-wife?
Ask around in her community, get on new parent websites, check with her insurance to find local midwives that they cover.
What advice do you have for expectant mothers looking to go with mid-wives for their births?
Ask a lot of questions. Find out their rates for c-sections and episiotomies. Find out their theories on how they approach birth and care for a women during labor and delivery.
Do you see this form of natural birth method as growing trend that will last? If so why?
Midwives have existed around the globe for generations and generations. As long as women are giving birth midwives or some type of "baby catcher" will continue to exist. In terms of a main-stream trend in the US, I believe that we are moving towards a healthier society on many levels, I think that as long as people are educated on the benefits and beauties of natural birth it will continue to grow as a "trend".
